Gaiety Theatre Memories by Elizabeth Townsend

Where to begin? Let's start in 1995, my first on-stage performance and one of my earliest memories. Aged 5, I was a village child in the Manx Ballet Company's performance of Goldilocks, and it was the start of my (short-lived) dance career, but my theatrical life continues to this day. The smell of greasepaint and Elnett hairspray from the dressing rooms has stayed with me for 25 years, and I am transported back to my childhood whenever I encounter them. Now, living in London, I work with some of the best stage performers in the world as a publicist, and always tell them about the wonderful theatre in my hometown. Many have actually performed there over the years, and have shared their own pleasant memories of the visit to the island! It's a lovely thought knowing that we have shared our talents on the same stage.
