In 2006 The Manx Gilbert and Sullivan Society invited ex D'Oyly Carte and Sadlers Wells principal tenor Thomas Round to the Island for the last night of our run of Lehar's 'The Merry Widow', and as part of our hospitality I arranged a private guided tour of the Gaiety for Tom. Half way through the tour Tom (aged 91) to catch his breath, sat himself down on Danilo's chaise longue, downstage right, pulled out his mobile and phoned his dear wife of 70 years, back home in Lancashire. 'Guess where I am, Alice. I'm sitting on Danilo's chaise longue. But do you know - they've set it stage right, when it should be stage left!' Tom then proceeded to sing to Alice down the phone 'You'll find me at Maxim's'. At the end of the tour Tom commented that The Gaiety was one of the most beautiful Theatres of all the hundreds in which he had sung over his long career.
The photo in this memory is of Tom Round.
