Gaiety Theatre Memories by David Paul Cowley

I ran my own painting and decorating business all my life, D.P.Cowley Painters & Decorators. I remember carrying out lots of painting and decorating work in the early 90’s inside the Gaiety Theatre. I carried out all the painting and decorating work work to the lower seated area of the Theatre, and all the decorating to the areas of walls etc., in the Gods. I hung all the specially printed wallpaper which replicates the original wallpaper that was original hung in the Gaiety. I also carried out Painting lining work and Fleur-de-lies painting on lower level ceilings. And sign writing of the fire exit doors to the rear of the building.

D.P.Cowley Painters & Decorators carried out the most extensive amount of work that had be carried out in that year, the Gaiety shutting for 6 weeks while the work was complete. The Gaiety is a real treasure, and it’s a credit to people the likes of Mervin Stokes, manager now Shamus Shea and all the Friends of the Gaiety Theatre. I’m now no longer able to carry out my job as a painter and decorator, as I have irreversible lung damage, and I really do miss it. It was a real passion, and I always loved doing work in the Gaiety. Not Gaiety related, but the last thing I restored was Castle Rushen Clock, on the Castle. I re-gilded the clock with 24k gold leaf. Although now, with being into art all my life, I try to run my own website artist based business.
